Redefining Summer Learning at Beaumont USD

Challenge

In the Beaumont Unified School District, a notable challenge presented itself – the need to reimagine summer learning, making it distinct and extraordinary compared to the traditional school year. The district sought to create an experience that would not only captivate students but also inspire them to embrace active learning during the summer months.

Solution

The solution arrived in the form of QUEST Camp, a program that proved to be a resounding success, garnering incredible feedback from students and facilitators alike. QUEST Camp allowed students to immerse themselves in a unique learning adventure. It wasn't just another summer program; it was an experience that allowed students to engage, collaborate, and refine their creative skills, all while making new friends and having fun.

QUEST became a transformative journey, one where students eagerly delved into immersive gameplay, solving challenges and unraveling mysteries with their peers. This collaborative spirit not only made learning an exciting adventure but also fostered meaningful friendships, making summer learning a cherished memory for students. The success of QUEST in the Beaumont Unified School District demonstrated that summer learning could indeed be different, unique, and an opportunity for students to grow, connect, and thrive.

Quotes

“QUEST involves the students in a way that excites them and sparks their creativity. It makes a really amazing thing to be a part of. I also love that it is student-led in many ways, so you are a guide on the side, and you can provide a lot of suggestions and guidance, however at the end of the day there is a lot of student ownership.” -Courtney Ridout, QUEST Facilitator, 5th Grade Teacher

“What surprised me most about my students playing QUEST is their creativity…seeing them inspire me to be more creative has been amazing.” -Lauren Tomsen, QUEST Facilitator, 3rd Grade Teacher

“Our students keep telling me when they leave to go home they can’t wait to come back the next day to get back into the world of QUEST. All I hear about is teachers asking if they can do it again and students wanting to know when they can do it next.” -Michael Griffin, Director of Expanded Learning

“Students enjoy teamwork and the gaming experience. They can persist and I can choose to only help when necessary.” -Teacher

“I loved that it encourages collaboration and communication and encourages higher levels of thinking/problem solving!” -Teacher

“QUEST is really fun; I think it’s like having your own imaginary life. My favorite part is being able to collaborate with your friends. It’s good for us to be able to think outside the box because in the future you’re going to have to think outside the box if you want to get something done.” -Gilmer, 5th Grade QUEST Student

“Quest was an amazing experience for me. The main storyline was great with Sam and the Harbinger being Ego all along. Plus the end was very suspenseful until finally revealing the whole thing was a simulator. Overall I thought Quest was a great journey and a fun experience.” -Student

“I love the working together on the challenges because it helps us be friends.” -Student
